The Santarém Region has excellent infrastructures and offers competitive installation and operating costs, being home to a significant number of companies that develop high-productivity activities. In the regional context it is important to note that, in addition to Santarém (13,6%) the municipality of Ourém has managed to reinforce and maintain a remarkable business activity, constituting the second most representative municipality in terms of quantity of companies (11,2%), followed by Tomar (8,0%) and Torres Novas (7,1%), with these four municipalities accumulating around 40% of the companies in the Region, according to 2017 data from INE (National Statistical Institute of Portugal).

The Santarém Region has a wide support network to attract investment and promote the region externally, which can take advantage of the territory’s anchor infrastructures potentiality, of the knowledge and capacity from the entities that ensure its management, as well as the key-agents that hold relevant roles on investment attraction and external promotion areas. It is in this context that the synergies generated through this operation logic provide a coordinated ecosystem of support for investment, based on an effective communication and decision model, which ensures investors with all the support necessary for the decision and implementation of their investment projects.

The Santarém Region presents a unique and well defined identity with two distinct realities intrinsic to its geographical location: Médio Tejo and Lezíria do Tejo. It is an economical and geographical context with a strong connection to the primary sector, which provides a set of strategic opportunities related to the valorization of natural resources and its entire value chain.

The gross domestic product (GPD) at current prices of the Middle Tejo sub region was €3.7 billion in 2017, while in the Lezíriate do Tejo sub region that amount ascended to 3.8€ billion.

In the period between 2011 and 2018, despite some fluctuations, the annual growth in exports registered a value of 36.5%, which was superior to the nation value of 35.3%. It is also worth mentioning the 11.9% growth in this indicator registered between 2016 and 2017, reaching €1.8 million of goods exported by the Region.
